A thousand times over I would offer myself to his service. I wanted to become a priest so that I could dedicate myself to his service day and night. I remember telling Him, Humanly speaking, I see no hope, but you have the power to make it happen, if you will. Then, with total confidence, I would leave it all in God’s hands, trusting Him to do whatever had to be done: which He did, as I shall say later.

GENEROSITY KNOWS NO AGE

Throughout life we harbour hopes and beautiful dreams. Some of these we have fulfilled at least partially. At times there are hopes and dreams that we will have to modify. At other times they have remained or will remain unfinished. All these hopes and dreams are no more than a sign of the greatness of our hearts, the breadth of the horizons to which we aspire, the sign that our hearts always long to be more beautiful, good, just, true… The boy Anthony Claret dreamed of a great commitment and saw in the priesthood the means of achieving it. He was ordained on this same day but in 1835.
We dream and imagine in the measure of the One who has created us, that is with breadth and greatness, without limits or extents. We do not dream only when we sleep. We also do it when we are awake. Some of these hopes and dreams are fulfilled, to a greater or lesser extent during our life. Others will remain frustrated wishes, like unachievable perfections. Maybe these expectations were too great for our feeble, fragile and limited moral strength.
All these hopes and dreams, those that have been fulfilled and those that have not, have moved our hearts, have lifted our sights towards the sun, have pushed us to look further and higher and also to look to the future.
In a word, they have spurred us on to walk with our feet placed firmly in the present but looking towards the horizon (that always remains a little farther away and we are never able to reach and conquer everything.) Perhaps this important question has fitted in amongst so many other questions. Lord what do you want me to do? Where do you live Lord? And maybe also, although it might seem a little foolish and a kind of madness, you must go towards where the voice calls you… Come and you will see!
