A Claretian and the “KRIS Organization” inaugurate a Community Library

Jul 29, 2011 | Claretian Family, Fr. Rhoel Gallardo, Solidarity & Mission

Manila, Philippines. This past 15th of July, Fr. Eduardo Apungan, CMF and members of the non-governmental group “Kristiyano-Islam Peace Library” (KRIS), inaugurated a community library in a ‘resettlement’ of Montalban, Rizal, with a call for better treatment of the victims of typhoon Ondoy, and from the fires and forced demolitions suffered by these people in the suburban zone of Manila.

Fr. Eduardo, director of the center ‘Claret Urban Poor Apostolate’ (CUPA), lamented the fact that there has been no serious effort on the part of the government to construct suitable housing for the inhabitants of the areas of the ‘resettlement’, in which thousands of relocated people have been obligated to sell their properties and return to over-crowded zones of Manila, with the consequent squandering of the supposed millions the government had allocated for their relocation. The resettlement zone where CUPA has opened the library is the home of 10,000 ‘relocated’ families. The Library has been made possible thanks to the help of the Kapatirang Claretiano Inc. (KCI) – a group of ex-Claretian priests and seminarians, founded to allow thousands of students in the areas of the resettlement to fulfill their educational needs, including computers and electrical assistance.

CUPA has donated three crates of encyclopedias and more than 600 children’s books, as well as text books, reference books, and other educational materials. KRIS and other donors have also distributed school supplies and book bags for the students who live in the ‘resettlement’.

CUPA is working to construct ‘a just and human place to live’ on behalf of the families of the resettlement. Meanwhile, KRIS is dedicated to the construction of libraries, renovation of poorly maintained libraries, and the distribution of books to promote education in marginated areas.
