Leioa, Spain. Claret School Askartza of Leioa has been awarded for its “Family Catechesis” project in the 1st Contest for Good Practices and Pastoral Innovation organized by Catholic Schools. The school has been carrying out this evangelizing project for 5 years, directed mainly at adults. The families find here a warm and cordial environment that allows them to (re)discover the faith in adulthood.
Families are offered an initial process of three years, with the possibility of continuing for two years after their children have celebrated the first Eucharist. During these first three years the dynamic is based on monthly meetings on Sunday mornings consisting of three moments:
- A first moment in which the parents meet in small groups (about 10 people) led by one of them and with some occasional interventions from the pastoral team. The children, for their part, also meet in small groups with their catechists. During this time, the younger brothers are looked after by some catechists with some play activities.
- This is followed by the Eucharist of the Christian community of the school, in which children, young people and adults all took part.
- After the Eucharist, there is a solidarity meal, prepared by the families themselves, which encouraged all the members of the community to meet.
To these monthly meetings we must add other activities: occasional outings (to get to know some social project, visit Nativity scenes, excursions), living together at the end of each year, the family Easter, collecting food, the solidarity walk, the “balloons” for peace…)
At the end of the third year, the children make their First Communion and the families are presented with the possibility of continuing with an adult catechumenate that lasts two years.
