Claret Ormoc Annual Summer Youth Camp

Apr 24, 2018 | ASCLA East, Fr. Rhoel Gallardo, Youth & Vocations Ministry

Ormoc City, Philippines. Since 2006, Ormoc Mission has not failed to hold this annual youth gathering in its compound. This year, April of 2018, they held its 12th Claret Ormoc Annual Summer Youth Camp, participated by 10 villages, with 250 youth leaders. This year’s modules include leadership skills training, Christian family life and Disaster awareness and preparedness. All 3 modules were chosen by the youth leaders themselves, from among other options, deemed significant to their present condition as young people of the mission. It is probably worth mentioning that all of them are super typhoon Haiyan (2013) and earthquake (2017) youth survivors. We are continuing this pastoral legacy… and there is no stopping.

This is Claret Youth Ministry in Ormoc. 250 STRONG! …and counting! All for the glory of God.

Historical background:

Few years after the Ormoc Mission was founded in 2002, the Novitiate House of the Philippines soon transferred from Zamboanga City to Ormoc. Part of the novitiate program, up to this time, is the regular Sunday apostolate of our novices where they visit the villages under its pastoral care, as part of their immersion and missionary training.

It has become a felt need in the succeeding years to form the teeming young people of the area, most of them coming from poor farming communities. The idea was to empower the youth, clarify and underscore their important role in church and community building and develop leadership and self-responsibility. Thus in 2007, under the leadership of Fr. Louie Guades III, then a novice, with his fellow novices of 2006 – 2007, the first ever Claret Ormoc Summer Youth camp was materialized.

It was a week-long celebration with meager budget mostly from donations. The first youth camp was participated by 5 villages. Modules and talks were prepared and given in connection with chosen relevant themes. Games and other youth activities were also employed to fit into the whole week. The first year proved to be a big success. For the first time, Ormoc was given a chance to gather its young members, showing full force and active participation, both in the Church (Catholic and Protestant) and in their local community dynamics.
