Claretian Participation at the Commission for Social Development (CSocD) at the UN

New York, USA. The 57th Commission for Social Development (CSocD 57) took place at the United Nations headquarters in New York from 11 to 21 February 2019 under the priority theme of “Addressing Inequalities and Challenges to Social Inclusion Through Fiscal, Wage and Social Protection Policies”. During the session of the Commission for Social Development high-level panel discussions and several side-events were held on the theme.

Fr. Art Gramaje from the Province of United States and Canada and Fr. Rohan Dominic, Claretian Representative at the UN have participated in the CSocD 57 on behalf of the Claretian NGO at the UN, Fondazione Proclade Internazionale -Onlus.

In September 2015, world leaders with a pledge to leave no one behind, unanimously adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This 2030 Agenda incorporates a vision of a shared future and of societies that are inclusive, just and equitable. Among the 17 SDGs, Goal 10, which seeks to combat inequality within and among countries, occupies center stage. Achieving this by 2030 entails tackling challenges to social inclusion, such as discrimination, disadvantages and multiple barriers faced by people in vulnerable situations. In many countries, rising inequality and social exclusion are the result of deep structural changes in national economies that have taken place over many years.

At the CSocD 57, the Member States shared their knowledge, experiences and lessons on how they design and implement fiscal policies that help reduce both inequality and poverty without slowing economic growth. The Commission also discussed the role of labor market policy, in addressing inequality and challenges to social inclusion. It also emphasized human rights based Social protection systems, including floors as key to eradicate poverty, reduce inequality and combat social inclusion.
