Claretian Response to the Severe Flooding in Central Vietnam

Oct 23, 2020 | Fr. Rhoel Gallardo, Solidarity & Mission

Huế, Vietnam. With the onslaught of the recent typhoons which brought severe flooding to several central provinces in Vietnam, the Claretian Missionaries in Vietnam initiated relief operations, particularly in the city of Huế and in the areas of Quảng Trị, Quảng Bình, and Quảng Ngãi provinces.

Prioritizing mainly the elderly, the sick, and the children, the response team distributed food packs and cash assistance. Fr. Joseph Lang, CMF, spearheaded the missionary work through generous people and volunteers. The Claretian Missionaries and the recipients directly affected by the flood are grateful to all those who made this social action possible.

From October 6, 2020, the country’s central region has experienced prolonged, heavy rains caused by the seasonal monsoon, enhanced by four tropical cyclones/depressions that have caused severe and widespread flooding and landslides. According to the Vietnam Disaster Management Authority (VDMA), the Provinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, and Thua Thien Hue have been heavily impacted by the flooding. Nghe An, Da Nang, Quang Nam, and Quang Ngai Provinces have also been affected.

As of October 22, 2020, VDMA has recorded 114 deaths, with 21 people still missing. 178,000 houses have been flooded, and more than 889,000 people are directly affected.

We ask everyone to accompany our missionaries, the flood survivors, and the Vietnamese people in your prayers.
