Makurdi, Nigeria. On Saturday, May 31, 2025, the Claretian SOMI Team carried out a compassionate outreach to two Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Makurdi, Benue State. The initiative, organized by Fr Wence Isidienu, CMF, represented CMF SOMI (Solidarity and Mission) and the East Nigeria Provincial Government.
The first camp hosted nearly 4,000 individuals, while the second was smaller but equally welcoming. Both are located about 9 km from the Claretian mission station in Makurdi Diocese. Representing the SOMI team were Fr. Emmanuel Ukata, CMF, and Fr. Paul Onele, CMF, both serving at St. Stephen’s Quasi-Parish, Asase, alongside medical professionals and pastoral collaborators.
Activities included prayer sessions, spiritual support, medical check-ups, medication distribution, and psychosocial engagement. Children were treated to games and given clothes, shoes, and hygiene items. Vulnerable individuals also received financial support. One woman gave birth during the visit and was celebrated with gifts, while another, experiencing complications, was taken to Makurdi for treatment.
Camp residents expressed gratitude and appealed for continued help, especially in healthcare, education, and skill development.
The visit renewed the Claretians’ commitment to support and uplift displaced communities through compassion and action.
