Claretians Unveil Landmark Chinese Bible Translation for Mainland Readers

Sep 4, 2025 | Bible Ministry, East Asia

Macao, Hong Kong, China. After nearly two decades of dedicated effort, on September 1, 2025,  the Claretian Missionaries unveiled a groundbreaking new Chinese translation of the Bible, specifically designed for readers in mainland China. The five-volume, 2,500-page edition is the result of an 18-year project that started shortly after the Claretians arrived in Macao in January 2006.

Translated directly from the original biblical languages into modern Mandarin using simplified Chinese characters, this edition complements the only other Catholic Bible available in China—an older version prepared by the Franciscans over 60 years ago. Since language and culture have changed greatly since then, the Claretians aimed to create a version that is both linguistically accurate and accessible to modern readers, including teenagers.

A Bible Like No Other

This new translation stands out for its innovative format, offering four integrated features on every page:

  • A new, contemporary translation of the biblical text
  • Chapter-by-chapter commentary tailored to the Chinese cultural context
  • A guide to Lectio Divina, including chapter-by-chapter discussions, encouraging personal reflection and spiritual growth.
  •  Extensive marginal references and updated introductions enhance understanding.

According to the Claretians, this is the first Bible in the world to include all four elements in one edition.

Global Reach in Progress

In addition to the mainland edition, a version using traditional Chinese characters—intended for Chinese-speaking communities outside China—is currently in the final stages of development.

This milestone signifies not only a major contribution to Catholic publishing in China but also an important step toward making Scripture more accessible and relevant to modern Chinese readers.
