Owerri, Nigeria. On Saturday, February 7, 2026, the Claretian Missionaries, East Nigeria Province, joyfully celebrated the diaconate ordination of nine of their students during a solemn Eucharistic celebration at Maria Assumpta Cathedral. The Mass, which began at 10:00 a.m., was presided over by Moses Chikwe, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Owerri, who also served as the ordaining prelate.

He was assisted by the Provincial Superior of the Claretian Missionaries, East Nigeria Province, Rev. Fr. Nathaniel Eke, CMF, and the Vicar General Pastoral of the Archdiocese of Owerri, Very Rev. Fr. Reginald Egbu. Their presence highlighted the spirit of collaboration between the Claretian Congregation and the local Church in fostering vocations and accompanying young men toward faithful service.

The nine Claretian ordinands were joined by twelve candidates from the Archdiocese of Owerri, bringing the total number of those ordained to twenty-three. While the celebration was a moment of joy for the entire local Church, the Claretian family offered special thanksgiving for the gift of these nine new deacons who now enter the ministry of service.

In his homily, Bishop Chikwe emphasized that the diaconate is rooted in humility and service. He encouraged the ordinands to proclaim the Gospel with zeal, serve at the altar with reverence, and attend compassionately to the needs of God’s people. Reflecting on the Claretian charism, he recalled the missionary vision of Anthony Mary Claret, noting that the ordination is a sign of renewal and hope for the Congregation and the Church.

The liturgy was attended by over 250 priests, about 65 religious women, and a large number of faithful from across the country. Following the Mass, celebrations continued at Maria Assumpta University, where families, friends, clergy, religious, and members of the Claretian family gathered for thanksgiving. Parents and relatives expressed gratitude to God for the vocation of their sons and appreciation to the Claretian Missionaries for accompanying them in their formation.

This joyful event strengthens the Claretian Congregation and enriches the Catholic Church in Nigeria, as the faithful pray that the ministry of these new deacons may bear abundant fruit for the glory of God and the service of humanity.
