Fifty years of Claretian Mission in Cameroon

Apr 8, 2021 | ACLA, Anniversaries, Cameroun

Yaoundé, Cameroon. The Claretian Missionaries arrived in Cameroon in 1970 (in the French-speaking part, precisely in Akono, in the Archdiocese of Yaoundé) and in 1986 (in the English-speaking part, precisely in Batibo, in the Archdiocese of Bamenda). Today we are present in eight dioceses (Yaounde, Mbalmayo, Obala, Bafoussam, Bamenda, Kumbo, Kumba, Buea, and Douala).

The apostolate of the Claretian Missionaries in Cameroon is grouped into two main sectors: parish animation and missionary formation. Activities include accompaniment of the faithful, management of schools, youth and vocation ministry, catechesis, the celebration of the sacraments, animation of basic ecclesial communities, biblical formation, and the promotion of justice and peace, among others.

To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Claretian mission in the country, the Independent Delegation of Cameroun has organized an international colloquium on the Claretian mission in the country with the theme “Fifty years of Claretian Mission in Cameroon: balance and perspectives”. The colloquium has the participation of several speakers, who will share this theme from different approaches, namely: missiological and developmental, historical, theological, and catechetical. In addition, the Superior General, Fr. Mathew Vattamattan, traveled to Cameroon, taking due precautions in view of the pandemic, to accompany the Major Organism in their Jubilee celebration.

May the celebration of their Jubilee help them to continue being joyful witnesses and messengers of the Gospel!
