First meeting of Claretian Bishops: joy, communion, missionary passion

Jul 1, 2025 | Cardinals and Bishops, Immaculate Heart of Mary

Rome, Italy. Eighteen Claretian bishops from across the globe took part in the first-ever encounter of Claretian bishops, a historic gathering that took place in Rome from June 26–28, 2025. Twelve bishops were present in person, while six others participated by sending messages or joining online. This fraternal event marked a milestone in the life of the Congregation, fostering unity, reflection, and renewed missionary commitment.

The bishops, who serve in dioceses across nine countries in Africa, America, Asia, and Europe, expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity to share their experiences and strengthen their Claretian identity. The Superior General, Fr. Mathew Vattamattam, CMF, actively participated in the three-day meeting, which followed the Jubilee of Bishops organized in Rome.

The program included prayer, community life, and working sessions. The bishops reflected on their Claretian vocation, their service as successors of the apostles in the spirit of St. Anthony Mary Claret, and the realities of their respective local churches. They also took part in the vocational vigil of the Jubilee celebrations and prayed at the tombs of Pope Francis and Cardinals Larraona and Tabera.

Frs. Efrén Limpo, CMF, and Pedro Belderrain, CMF, together with members of the General Curia, accompanied the participants throughout the event. A highlight was the celebration of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Heart of Mary at the Basilica of the Heart of Mary in Rome, joined by several Claretian bishops.

Messages from other branches of the Claretian Family offering reflections on the episcopal ministry were warmly received by the bishops, who felt supported and deeply united to the Congregation. Although their pastoral responsibilities differ from those of other Claretian missionaries, the bishops reaffirmed their strong sense of belonging and their desire to live out their ministry inspired by the life and example of St. Claret—rooted in the Word of God, close to the people, preferentially committed to the poor, and defenders of justice and care for creation.

Encouraged by this enriching experience, the bishops proposed that the General Government explore ways to ensure its continuation in the future.
