Flood Disaster in Claret Sadan Community Vythiry

Aug 9, 2018 | ASCLA West, St. Thomas

Vythiri, India. Claret Sadan Community Vythiri, one of the communities of St. Thomas Province situated in North Kerala, India is under flood disaster due to very heavy rain falls and landslides. The members of the community are safe but held up on the first floor of the residence as the whole area is surrounded by water. Police and fire force are trying to bring them to a safer place but the heavy flow of water slows down the rescue operations. Water rose to almost 8 feet high and the ground floor of the school and residence and up to the altar level in the parish church are under water. The community had undergone a similar situation in 2009. But it was lesser in degree at that time.

The flood has caused a heavy lose to the school and community since all vehicles, computer furniture are submerged in water. Though foreseeing a flood they had kept all items in a safer height and moved the vehicles to a safer place but the sudden rise in water level crossing all our expectations caused heavy damage. About 50 families in this area are also affected by this flood. The people are shifted to safer places but their houses are almost destroyed. We request your valuable prayers and support to the community and the faithful of this area.

Soon we will be going from here to support and help them but all the roads to Waynad area are not open now due to landslides and flood. We will update you of the further developments” says Fr. Thomas Paingottu, CMF, the Provincial Secretary of the Province of St Thomas.
