Copiapó, Chile. On October 13th, at a liturgy presided over by the Bishop of Copiapó, Bishop Gaspar Quintana, CMF recalled the first anniversary of the rescue of the 33 miners trapped in the San Jose Mine in Copiapó, Chile.

The celebration drew various political, civil, and diplomatic personalities from Chile, as well as the miners and their families.

Bishop Quintana conducted a reflection on the text of Matthew’s Gospel which described the compassion of Jesus for those in need. He also reiterated his call to all sectors to make a commitment to improve the conditions of security for miners and for all workers. The pastor of the Adventist Church, Carlos Parra, was also present at the celebration, who shared his experience at the camp.

Later there was a blessing of the first stone of the memorial which will remember the accident and successful rescue at the place where the “Camp of Hope” was situated. This memorial was the initiative of Bishop Gaspar Quintana who petitioned the authorities to erect the monument as a visible sign which will help help the country not to forget the lessions which this accident left upon the country.
