Haiti. New earthquake, new panic

Jan 21, 2010 | Antillas, Health Care

Haiti. A powerful replica of the earthquake that devastated the Haitian capital one week ago hit Haiti today, Wednesday 20th, shaking the few building that remained standing and caused the people to run shouting to the streets in the midst of a general panic.

The new earthquake, of magnitude 6.1 was the strongest replica since the apocalyptic earthquake of January 12. At first sight it was not clear if it caused additional important damage or victims.

The earthquake happened at 7.03 in the morning, some 56 km (35 miles) northeast of Port-au-Prince, at a depth of 22km (13,7 miles), according to the USA Geological Institute.

The journalists of the United Press in the Haitian capital confirmed that the tremor made the streets be filled with terrified persons.

Last week’s earthquake left about 200,000 wounded and 1.5 million homeless, according to the European Union Commission.
