Mar 14, 2019 | UN Presence

New York City, USA. The 63rd Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW 63) is taking place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from March 11 – 22, 2019. The priority theme of this year is, “Social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.” CSW is always the UN’s single-largest intergovernmental and civil society gathering. This year, over 6,000 women and around 1,250 men are attending from all the corners of the world.

Two Claretian Sisters (RMI), Sr. Ondina Cortes and Sr. Yolanda Nunez, and Fr. Rohan Dominic, CMF are participating in the CSW as representatives of Fondazione Proclade Internazionale – Onlus (Claretians). Besides the official meetings, hundreds of side and parallel events are organized by the Member States and the Civil Society Organizations. Fondazione Proclade Internazionale – Onlus is co-sponsoring two parallel events and organizing an event as a member of the Justice Coalition of Religious (JCoR).

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), which was established in 1946, is the principal global intergovernmental body at the UN, exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. The CSW is instrumental in promoting women’s rights, documenting the reality of women’s lives throughout the world, and shaping global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women.

It also monitors and reviews the progress and problems in the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and in mainstreaming a gender perspective in UN activities.

During the Commission’s annual two-week session, representatives of UN Member States, civil society organizations and UN entities discuss progress and gaps in the implementation of the 1995 Beijing Declaration, the key global policy document on gender equality as well as emerging issues that affect gender equality and the empowerment of women.
