San José del Palmar, Colombia. On August 10, 2026, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake, with its epicenter in San José del Palmar in the department of Chocó, struck Colombia and was felt in several regions of the country. The Servicio Geológico Colombiano reported that the earthquake occurred at 7:34 a.m., at a depth of 103 kilometers. As damage assessments continue, several communities and works of the Misioneros Claretianos – Provincia Colombia-Venezuela have reported significant damage.

In Quibdó, the Campus Nuevo de Uniclaretiana suffered damage from collapsed walls and falling debris, which also damaged several vehicles. In Cali, damage was reported to the church and rectory of the community of Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro. At Colegio Santa Dorotea, sede Bretaña, windows were shattered and some walls collapsed.

The situation in Pereira is especially serious. Parroquia Claret was left partially destroyed, with significant structural damage, including the collapse of part of the roof and damage to the walls.

In response to the emergency, P. Luis Armando Valencia V., CMF, Superior Provincial of the Misioneros Claretianos – Provincia Colombia-Venezuela, invited parishes, schools, the university, foundations, and other Claretian works to remain attentive to the needs of those affected and to respond with presence, care, and fraternal closeness.

He also expressed gratitude for the solidarity shown by P. Mathew Vattamattam, CMF, P. Carlos Sánchez, CMF, and many other brothers of the Congregation who reached out to inquire about the situation and accompany the affected communities.

As the verification of damages and safety conditions continues, the Province reaffirms its commitment to remain close to those facing these moments of uncertainty. As P. Luis Armando Valencia V., CMF, stated: “The earth may tremble. Our faith, fraternity, and hope will not.”
