Spain. Fr. Segundo Gutiérrez becomes a member of the Royal Academy of Cordoba Spain. In a solemn public session in the central office of the Royal Academy of Sciences, Fine Arts and Noble Arts of Cordoba, Fr. Segundo Gutiérrez, CMF, was received as a member of the said Royal Academy on March 19, after he was introduced by D. José Roldán and Dña. Ana Padilla –the most recent full members. The corporation explained the nomination by his spiritual presence, his art as a wood carver and the religious humility that set him apart.
The theme chosen by Fr. Segundo for his inaugural discourse was “the mystery of wood,” basing it on a sample of how to put art at the service of faith. That is what his more thank 5000 sculptures reflect, made of various tropical woods and scattered throughout the world. He was able to emphasize the secrets he gets from the wood, with expressions both of vitality, serenity, love and joy, as well as sadness and other more adverse feelings. In his carved works he aims at the propagation of the Gospel, and the ideas of liberty, optimism and hope.
