St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City. The XV Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops opened with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist at the St. Peter’s Square, Wednesday Morning, 3rd of October. The Synod’s theme is “Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment.”

“Having been formed by so many choices taken in the past, young people now call us to join them in facing the present with greater commitment and to work against whatever prevents their lives from growing in a dignified way. They ask us and demand of us a creative dedication, a dynamism which is intelligent, enthusiastic and full of hope. They ask us not to leave them alone in the hands of so many pedlars of death who oppress their lives and darken their vision.” – Part of the homily of Pope Francis.

Aside from the input solicited through the Preparatory Document, to make sure that the voices of young people be heard concretely, a Pre-Synod event was held in Rome on 19-24 March where 300 young people participated, and fifteen thousand others participated online. The working document for the Synod contains material from the document prepared by the young people who came from all over the world that was presented to Pope Francis on Palm Sunday and from the summary of the input sent in from the Local Churches.

The Synod that will end on the 28th of October is participated by several over 250 bishops, more than forty young people, as well as invited auditors, experts, consultants and fraternal delegates. During the Inaugural Mass, the Pope was emotional to note that two bishops from the mainland China are participating in the Synod.
