Solemn Anniversary of the Venerable Father Mariano Avellana

May 25, 2018 | Causes of Saints, MICLA, San José del Sur

Santiago, Chile. More than one hundred devotees of Venerable Father Mariano Avellana gathered on the night of May 14 next to his tomb in the Basilica of the Heart of Mary, in Santiago, to commemorate the 114th anniversary of his Passover.

In a Eucharist concelebrated by the members of the local Claretian community, the figure of the venerable missionary was highlighted, who between 1873 and 1904 evangelized with sanctity, above all the sick, the prisoners and the despised, in more than 1,500 km from the rough Chilean geography, until dying during the last of his more than 700 missions, in a small town in the northern Chilean mining.

In addition to pointing out relevant features that made up the “heroic virtues” recognized by Pope St. John Paul II on Father Mariano, they were also thankful of the “gift of God” that marked his passage through Chile among the first Claretian Missionaries who arrived in America.
During the universal prayer, they prayed for many sick patients entrusted to his intercession, some of them present in the Eucharist, and for a full miracle of healing that is expected since then in view of the beatification of the Venerable. It was emphasized to continue invoking the intercession of Father Mariano for patients or serious victims.
Also remembered were the Claretian Missionaries who, in a century and a half, following the example of the Venerable, gave their lives in the evangelization of the Chilean people. Among them, Fr. Pablo Vallier, the first Claretian who arrived in the country with six companions, and Fr. Donato Berenguer, the main promoter in the construction of the Basilica of the Heart of Mary. And, in a special way, Fr Federico Gutiérrez, recently deceased, who for ten years carried out a diligent investigation into the life of Father Mariano, the basis of Mariano’s declaration as Venerable.

Commemorations of the Venerable were also held in other communities and colleges of the San José del Sur Province.
