Feb 27, 2024 | México

Morelia, Michoacán. The Claretian Spirituality Centre in Morelia hosted the XVI Provincial Assembly of Mexico from February 19 to 23, 2024. The Assembly brought together Claretian Missionaries from different communities in Mexico and was presided over by the Provincial Superior, Fr. Ernesto Mejía Mejía, CMF, in the presence of the General Superior, Fr. Mathew Vattamattam, CMF. The focus of the Assembly was on key themes for the congregation, including synodality, missionary spirituality, and discerning leadership, which were analyzed and discussed during the event.

The event commenced with an atmosphere of camaraderie, as participants exchanged experiences and expectations. The opening session outlined the objectives and methodology to be followed, emphasizing dialogue, prayer, and reflection as central themes.

On the second day, Father General focused the discussion on the significance of communal prayers and conversations, taking inspiration from the story of the pilgrim of Emmaus as a framework for dialogue. The session also touched on the current state of the Church in Latin America and the Caribbean, and suggested actionable steps for the Province to take.

On the third day, they focused on the themes of missionary spirituality and fraternal life. There were presentations and group dialogues that allowed them to deepen their understanding of these fundamental aspects of Claretian life. The “Protocol for Prevention and Attention to Cases of Abuse” was also presented, which emphasized their commitment to protecting and caring for each other within the community.

The fourth day highlighted challenges and opportunities around youth and vocations, as well as aspects of government and economy within the Province, seeking adaptations towards more synodal and participative practices.

The final day of the Assembly included a tribute to the deceased Claretian Missionaries of Mexico, followed by sessions to evaluate and define future commitments with the aim of achieving effective synodality integration in the community project.

The Provincial Assembly was concluded with a Mass led by Fr. Ernesto Mejía, CMF. He expressed his gratitude to all the participants and emphasized the significance of collaboration with the laity in achieving the mission of the Province. The XVI Provincial Assembly served as a platform for discussion, contemplation, and direction on the future of the Province of Mexico in the current context.
